‘Callsign Red Lechwe’ operate on the fringes of the Great Busanga Plains. When not tackling poachers they are helping re-supply convoys out of the Zambian mud in order to deliver their rations and wages. Rainy season in Zambia is best negotiated on foot. These portraits were created prior to the scouts walking the final three kilometres to their camp. Asking them to stand on a termite mound for portraits places them on the pedestal they deserve, so the world can see the men who risk their lives so that wildlife survives.
The Bigger Picture is an exhibition of art, photography and film which weaves a visual tale of life as an anti-poacher in Zambia captured over a month on the ground this February. The exhibition is being held in the Threadneedle Space at the Mall Galleries, helping to bring the story of wildlife protection to life, as part of The Wildlife Artist of the Year’s tenth anniversary celebrations.
